Historical period piece? Slow burn psychological horror? The world’s longest Captain Morgan’s commercial? It turns out you can be all three! Robert Egger’s directorial debut, “The Witch”, was a divisive 2016 horror film that wowed some and bored others. Whatever side you fall on, you have to admire the extraordinary attention to detail in the writing and production design here. It’s dark, it’s moody and for all you social studies teachers out there, it’s painstakingly historically accurate! “The Witch” may not be for everyone but it is gorgeously shot and crafted with a sense of time, place and atmosphere that is all too uncommon.
